ATX Cocina, Austin’s Hottest New Modern Mexican Restaurant Is Gluten-Free

ATX Cocina

We are truly spoiled to have another Modern Mexican restaurant in Austin. ATX Cocina just opened in downtown Austin near the 2nd Street District in the Northshore residences building. Executive chef Kevin Taylor meshes the traditional flavors of Mexico with ultra-fresh ingredients to create health-conscious and sophisticated pairings, from Mexico City–style street snacks to larger, shareable entrées.

ATX Cocina’s watermelon tiki punch + el hefe carne asada has made my list of favorite meals in Austin! I’m having serious FOMO right now while writing this blog post – how did I miss the queso fundido and esquites (sweet butter poached corn)!? ATX Cocina isn’t marketed as a gluten-free concept but the waiter did let me know that everything on the menu is gluten-free.

Happy hour is every day from 4:30 to 6:30 with $3 off cocktails, wine, draft beer, and $4 off select menu items. Valet is complimentary so add ATX Cocina to your new restaurants to check out!

ATX Cocina

MASA TORTILLAS & SALSAS

Start the meal with masa tortillas made from corn from Oaxaca, Mexico that was made thousands of years ago. The salsa trio is salsa verde, salsa arból, and smoked refritos.

MEZCAL COCKTAILS

We had a variety of cocktails that were all superb so I recommend you to drink your way through the cocktail menu. 😉

Beef tartare at ATX Cocina

BEEF TARTARE

Smoked bean, shaved egg yolk, and morita chili.

Crab tostada at ATX Cocina

CRAB TOSTADA

Jumbo lump crab, corn, avocado, tomato, tomatillo salsa, and herbs.

El Hefe at ATX Cocina

“EL JEFE” CARNE ASADA

Rib tomahawk, grilled cebollitas, roasted tomato, and smoked chile butter. Our favorite from the night at ATX Cocina! It’s a big portion that’s meant to be shared.

ATX Cocina

SHRIMP AL CARBON

Valentina-brown butter, charred lemon, garlic-pequin crumb, and masa. Pro tip: use the corn tortilla that’s placed strategically at the bottom of the pawns to soak up all that yummy goodness.

Watermelon tiki punch

WATERMELON TIKI PUNCH

ATX Cocina only makes 6 of these a night and you have to have a party of 4 people to order one. I highly recommend calling ahead because they’re SO good. The watermelon tiki punch is a triple threat: vodka, tequila, and vodka. That’s 9 ounces of alcohol if you’re counting. It’s not vegan though, the chile salt sprinkled on top are smoked worms. If you are vegan or opposed to bugs, ask for the regular salt.

ABUELITA CHOCOLATE

You can’t leave without dessert, I loved the abuelita chocolate!
